Native American Heritage Month
November is Native American Heritage Month, and due to that fact that I joined the Native American society I was lucky enough to volunteer during their celebration. They had Natives performing dances such as Jingle, Fancy Shaw and a Warrior dance. It was beautiful to see them celebrate their culture often left to be forgotten, and for me to experience seeing as their are not really any in the UK.
The next week they held their first Native American Film Festival in CSUSM, which I also volunteered for, helping with tickets. I also got to watch one documentary, which was very moving, called 100 years. It was about Elousie Cobell, a Blackfeet native, who fought 13 years for the lawsuit against the US government on the illegal leasing and usage of native land. She settled for $3.4 billion even though she felt the Natives where entitled to more, she broke down saying she know Natives who have worked and died in poverty that she will settle for the money so they get something. Unfortunately she died before the payments where handed out.

Digital Photo Documentary
I found a friend with braids who I started taking test shoots with, using a variety of styles from long to close ups. Feedback from the class suggested that I focus on doing closer shoots so that the hair is the main focus, not the surroundings. I also looked at the visuals for Solange's new album, because I loved the way it was edited, reducing the saturation. So in the next photoshoot I had a solid background and only focused on her shoulders upwards. I then edited it so that the background had colour and sharped her braids; which received better feedback.
My professor got us to start a blog for this class, each week we write a post about one or more photographers. At times I thought it was time consuming because we I would have to watch an hour long presentation before writing the post. However now I am seeing the benefits because I can see that my professor picked notable photographers that have produced recognisable work such as Collie Schorr. This class is useful because I am learning how to use a professional colour and edit pictures using Lightroom, I will now be able to take my own pictures for my projects and not just rely on doing illustrations.
