Visual Arts
While I have been in CSUSM I have been trying to go to as many events as possible, through this I have met a lot people and learnt more about the culture within California. I went to an event about the Afro Latino culture, that started with a brief history on the connection between South America and Africa being the slave trade. This section was educating people that Latinos have African ancestry; which is a fact people are unaware of. Then there was a panel 4 Afro Latinos talking about their experience on learning to love both cultures and the racism felt if they looked more black than latino. It was interesting to hear their experiences especially coming from the UK where there is not a big population of South Americans. Also I spoke to a member of staff after and she said she appreciated how I was taking a interest in their culture.
Visual Arts
I am really enjoying my Visual Arts class, because I am learning the theory of art and how it has been used around the world. I made sure I picked this module because one thing I really want to learn while in Coventry was the theory of Graphic Design because I felt it would improve my work having more knowledge in this area. Even though Visual Arts is not Graphic Design their is still a connection being visual elements.
So far I am learning the fundamentals and elements for instance art styles, the main styles being Naturalistic, Abstract, Stylized and Nonrepresentational. In knowing this I am able to identify the art style used in an artwork as well as know how to create work within a specific style if the brief requires or if I believe this art style would be beneficial. Another element that was really useful is the theory of colour, looking at colour wheels and colour schemes such as complementary, analogues and triadic. This taught me that colour is beyond conveying a mood, but it can be used to create harmony or chaos. This is helpful because Graphic Design is about communication and having knowledge on colour will improve my ability to communicate a message.
