Essay: The Golden Goblet
I had a module called Design in Context where I have to produce a book cover and a essay in response to the magazine extract The Golden Goblet by Beatrice Warde. At first I had no clue what this woman was talking about a golden goblet and a 'crystal-clear goblet', and what it had to do with design. And I love literature and analysing text but this one was different. But it taught me something about design. Well from this extract I learnt that their 2 approaches to designs the golden goblet being design that focuses more on appearance, examples I used was the Arts and Crafts movement and Psychedalic posters. The other transparent goblet I feel was referring to Art Nouveau and Bauhaus; due to their simplicity which I love. When we were discussing in our groups about the text, we came to the conclusion that the transparent goblet makes the concept clear, while the other hides it with it's overwhelming decorative aspects.
