Essay: The Golden Goblet

Image
I had a module called Design in Context where I have to produce a book cover and a essay in response to the magazine extract The Golden Goblet by Beatrice Warde. At first I had no clue what this woman was talking about a golden goblet and a 'crystal-clear goblet', and what it had to do with design. And I love literature and analysing text but this one was different. But it taught me something about design. Well from this extract I learnt that their 2 approaches to designs the golden goblet being design that focuses more on appearance, examples I used was the Arts and Crafts movement and Psychedalic posters. The other transparent goblet I feel was referring to Art Nouveau and Bauhaus; due to their simplicity which I love. When we were discussing in our groups about the text, we came to the conclusion that the transparent goblet makes the concept clear, while the other hides it with it's overwhelming decorative aspects. The concept gives the viewer that ability to wonder ...

Cochinita Pibil

Image
Well being Nigerian generally most of the foods I can cook is Nigerian. Since my accommodation doesn't allow blenders, because we're not adults and we're going start blending our fingers. The main foods I can cook contains rice, and too much is not good. I like to experiment, especially with different cultures, so I thought let me start cooking foods from different countries. First Mexicana I spent hours looking for what to cook then a came across Cochinita Pibil (the pork) and Sope (the pastry). When I found out you season with lemon and orange I was thinking that is going to taste weird. But it came out really nice, not like the in the picture because I didn't want to make a lot the first time in case I didn't like it.

Sheffield

Image
Even though it's a month later lol, I went to Sheffield to see a close friend that went to that University.     Missed her so much. I like to travel and since I'm in the midlands and out of my parents house (they can't give me an excuse for not going out, they still try ahhha parents will be parents) I might as well explore. The trip was slightly annoying I got to the station on time but the worker side I couldn't get on the train, so this messed up everything and I had to get a new ticket but that meant waiting an hour and getting to Sheffield at 1:00 in the morning. Also my friend wanted to take me to a club that finished at 3/4.  I also had to go through the experience of changing in the nasty train toilets and doing my makeup ( not foundation and eyeliner full on highlight and contouring) with my tiny mirror. Kind of a bad experience but I say well this is the uni experience. But I got their ok and overall I enjoyed my stay there, expect when we order...

Screen Printing

Image
Screen printing at first to me sounded like printing with the just the word screen in front, until I got shown examples of other students work. And it looked so professional but rough at the same time. I mean in terms of how most designs look so computerised and too clean cut, however with screen printing it gives it a more authentic and hand crafted edge. Your given a woven board like this and you have your printed separations that you print onto the board. Then spread evenly emulsion, looks like green slime, over the board then you leave it to dry. You then use the holes to leave the print on the board. Then the printing process begins. You get the coloured ink you want and spread it over, once forward (called a bleed), then spreading it backwards is how it prints onto the paper. For music festival I have to create a ticket using screen printing, so here was someone's design in my group. Each group member chooses their own individual colours; mine are purple, white ...

One thing learnt

This module has taught me one thing about myself, that I'm a very "get up and go" kind of person. Whether it's that something bad has happened and naturally I get down but after a while I pull myself up and move on. And there's the other case were I literally "go", as go out and explore but the only issue is I don't record it, whether it's taking pictures or writing it in a diary. This is why I haven't been blogging a lot I do too much but give myself little time to actually save the memory.  This can also relate to design in terms of me being able to use these memories to influence my designs, also to see what my style or why of working is. So prepare to read, see and absorb moreeeee

Sublimation

Image
I am doing a module called Integrated Design where I have to basically redesign a brand for a unsung music festival. I was given BPM (Bartenders, Promoters and Mangers) a Brazilian house/electro music. When it comes to printing most people will think it's just going to the printing room to print on paper. Then I got told about sublimation; which is basically when you use heat to transfer dyes (could be from a printed picture) onto materials such as plastic, card, paper or fabric. This how mine came out, the black on white background makes the logo readable and clear. Personally I would go with more colour, but that's what happens when your working in a group Here are pictures that I took of other students' work I found. My favourite is the wood because the like natural finish it gives.

The spirit and soul

Image
One of my New Year resolutions was to become more spiritual. Spiritual in the sense that I'm more connected to the spirit and soul. You know just being at peace with myself in a world that's forcing you to be something false. Someone who I look up to in this aspect is Jhene Aiko, I mean I liked her before she became famous and cut her hair trying to portray this cute, peace and loving image. I loved it when she looked like an ordinary person that loves the idea of being intune with your soul (I personally feel she was more authentic then). I've always been like this, she didn't influence me. Ever since year 9/10 I was interested in controlling my breathe in yoga and and controlling my mind during meditating. And I like be able to connect with people on a deep level; for example when giving people advice. You know being able to connect with a person and their situation, this could a be a situation I haven't gone through, but I can put myself on your level. I hav...
