Rapprochement

An opportunity came up in the Black Student Union, which was to do an African inspired dance for a cultural exposition. I've always wanted to be apart of this type of dance more popular in the USA than England. I joined, however it was not easy because people were not turning up so it was just 2 of us. Also had someone choreographing the dance but due to family issues could not finish teaching us. So me and my friend made a decision that it will just be us too also we will finish making up the dance moves. To be honest I like our moves better, but it was fun teaching her different African styles of dance. We spent a month practicing, then we finally performed it more than once and people loved. I was so proud to be apart of the first African inspired dance performance at CSUSM. It was amazing sharing my culture that I am proud of with people.

Installation

I was given another installation project which was to choose between rapprochement or intervention and create a installation piece on a model of one of the school building Carven Hall. Having done Product Design in GCSE I am familiar with making models and working with scale. As a class we measured the building using board as our material.  I chose to base my installation on rapprochement, because I love the idea of make the audience witness themselves being present. My main focus was on sight and sound, my final idea had multi coloured wind chimes going across the diameter on the first 3 floors (the building had a cylinder shape). When you look up it forms a peace sign, which I was chose due current events such as the USA Presidential elections and problems within Syria. Also the  building leads to the Global Engagement centre, I used it as a way to think about peace as you connect with different people and cultures. Also the sound of the wind chimes is relaxing, acting as stress reliever and connect with simplicity. The wind chimes being colourful give you something visual to look at as well as a reminder of nature.

This project was really useful, I believe that these skills can be used in interaction design; having knowledge on how to connect with the audience using their senses, not just relying on sight. This will make more work more unique. Also I can have different forms of medium when doing Graphic Design projects, and not just limit it to print.
