Reflection

Time for some reflection on my placement year so far.

The whole process of PDP, especially in 2nd year where we had to make an action plan to how we would achieve our aspirations really prepared me for this year. I guided me to the necessary steps that I need to take such as research the best modules to take while in California as well as the companies I should hand me CV to in Spain. It helped me narrow my choices. PDP helped my produce my creative CV and cover letter which got me my internship, the countless times I had to rewrite and show my tutors paid off.

I definitely have more to show in my portfolio, especially coming from my Graphic Design module. I learn how to basically produce fine art online, as well as really enhance my Adobe skills. I learnt new software such as Lightroom and how to use a camera professionally. I can add to my CV my experience on professional blogging, review and analysis. My typography and visual communications classes, provided me with the knowledge on how to spot and solve a creative problem such as letter spacing. My input is actually being used to help improve a company.

Both experience have made me realise I want to go into the film production industry. Having taken a module called Digital Photo Documentary, which I thought would involve film but it still came in handy. This due to the fact that I turned my final piece into a slide show which is kind of like a video; I like to capture real moments a turn them into a story. I want it to be more than something static.  I have I'm looking into post production film editing or cinematography (I have done little research). However I do know I will have to do short course after I graduate so I gain the necessary skills. Graphic Design is and will always be useful because of how broad it is, the ability to use visual elements whether it be type, space, colour or image to communicate a message is something I would not have probably learnt in film studies. However it give me different perspective, because I will look at the whole package, from the poster to the merchandise.

I intended to working with an international design or film production company in the UK, so that if I want to (which I will) travel, it would be easier to work in different branches. I will definitely make sure the company has a branch in California preferably San Diego or Los Angeles, because I would eventually want to move there. Mainly because I fell in love with San Diego, the weather and diverse culture but also due to the fact that's were the big film industry is. I'm not afraid to dream big, it took me this far so I'll keep going.
